2018 News Stories

These are all the archived news items that have appeared on the home page this year.

30th December

The final parkruns of 2018 saw Jenny Stiles set a new Pb at Erddig. Well done, Jenny.

23rd December

Good to see some of you still racing in the lead up to thingy. Parkruns were contested at Finsbury, Hove, Shrewsbury, Delamere, Erddig and The Whammy. No pbs to report.

Don't forget there's a gentle run on Boxing Day. Meeting 11:00 at the Rugby Club.

17th December

Eight Whippets took on the challenging Mortimer Forest Trail race yesterday. Rob Sharam was first home for us in 38th place. Liz Featherstone was our first lady. Rob and LIz were accompanied by Simon Phillips, Rob Ingham, Peter Holmes, Duncan Meredith, James Rainbow and Ali Dolphin. I think they've probably all earned their Christmas feasting.

I'll hopefully see some of you for a drink on Boxing Day.

16th December

Whippets were only in local parkrun action this weekend. Members ran at Chester, Shrewsbury, Wepre and Erddig. No pbs to report.

13th December

Club Championship races and dates for 2019 have now been added. Only a few dates are missing.

Club Championship

11th December

Recent joiner Jenny Stiles also ran the Tatton Yule Yomp setting a pb for her first official race with the club.

10th December

From the results I've seen there were only 6 Whippets running in the Telford 10k and 2 in the Tatton Yule Yomp. So if you also ran there, or elsewhere, please let me know! The 6 that did run had a good time with pbs being set by Paul Holmes, Sue Evans and Natalie Stevenson at Telford.

9th December

Yesterday, Whippets were in parkrun action at Clair (Haywards Heath), Erddig, Crewe and Isabel Trail (Stafford), No pbs to report.

3rd December

James Rainbow writes:

"Four of us (Rob Sharam, Rob Ingham, Pete Holmes and myself) ran in the Cardington Cracker Fell Race on Sunday and it certainly lived up to its name! It packed in plenty of hills and mud in 9 miles of great running in the South Shropshire hills."

Have fun in Wem tomorrow if that's where you're going.

2nd December

James Rainbow writes:

"Nine Whippets took part in round 2 of the Winter Handicap at the Shrewsbury park run yesterday. Run of the day was by Keith, who was just 3 seconds off his own prediction, followed by Natalie in 2nd (15 seconds) and Katie Evans in 3rd place (18 seconds). In the overall, Janice and Keith are sitting clear of the rest but there are seven Whippets all within 30 seconds. Round 3 is in in the New Year on the 19 Jan 2019 and remember its the best three results from the four rounds that count."

Winter Handicap

Elsewhere Whippets ran parkruns at Telford, Erddig and Hove. No pbs to report.

Don't forget Tuesday's social run at Wem!

26th November

Gary Gray, Natalie Stevenson, Michelle Purcell and Pam Hamilton ran in the Wilmslow Festive 10k yesterday with Gary setting a new Pb. Well done, Gary!

25th November

Yesterday saw Whippets at parkruns in Brighton, Shrewsbury, Erddig and Oswestry. There were pbs for James Gresty, Natalie Stevenson and Odilia Briceno Plummer. Well done, all!

19th November

Yesterday, Whippets ran in the Beckbury trail race and the Conwy Half Marathon. Saul Mellor ran 1:42:15 for a pb at Conwy. Well done, Saul.

18th November

Friday night's bash didn't stop Whhippets from turning out on Saturday for a run. Members contested parkruns at Shrewsbury, Erddig, Ludlow, Crewe and Northwich. There were no pbs, so Friday must have been a good night!

Nikki Shingler writes:

For something a little different I am organising a club run from a different location with food to follow:

Where: lower lacon caravan park, Wem SY4 5RP

When: Tuesday 4th December

Please let Nikki know if you'd rather beef stew or vegetarian stew. It is streetlit, but might be worth bringing a head torch and some money for a hot chocolate or other drinks.

17th November

If you didn't get to the club's 11th Birthday Bash last night you must be dying to find out who won what. Apologies to anyone I get wrong if my memory's not working!

Club Champion Male Shaun Burgess
Club Champion Female Mimi Owen
Summer Handicap Zara Elson
Most Improved Male Peter Holmes
Most improved Female Nikki Shingler;
Most Improved Beginner Charlotte Dolphin

Paul White won the the Marathon Ballot leaving poor old James Rainbow to wonder if his chance will ever come! Good luck, Paul.

Thity-nine standards awards were also presented see Club Standards

One of the highlights of the evening was Shaun's acceptance speech. He might not have enjoyed it- but he's a natural. A born stand-up comedian - that's if you've got a chair handy. Sorry Shaun, couldn't resist!

Sandwiches, pies, rolls and cakes all went down well. And a few bevvies were sunk. Roll on next birthday.

16th November

Last Saturday also the Mad Jacks 5 with seven Whippets running. Results have now been posted.

13th November

Despite the competing events on Saturday it was good to see the club still field teams in The North Wales Cross Country fixture at Wrexham. Sadly, the men could only field a short team of 3 and as a result have dropped down to 9th in their league. The women fielded a full team and moved up from 14th to 12th. The final two fixtures are in the New Year, so there's still time for both teams to move up their respective divisions.

12th November

11th Birthday Bash - it's on Friday

There's still time to get your ticket - see Adam Richards, Dean Richards or Simon Phillips. Only a tenner!

If you're in the ballot for a Marathon you really need to attend! This year's winner will come from:

  • Liz Rankin
  • Chell Scrase
  • James Rainbow
  • Keith Cotton
  • Paul White
  • Peter Holmes
  • Shaun Burgess

There will also be the usual raffle - please help us raise some funds for charity by bringing along a prize. Besides we all enjoy the wine and choccies at the end of the evening. I may even bring a copy of my novel down - I've still got a few limited editions available - sorry!

11th November

Friday night saw Simon Phillips and Mandy Lewis take on the first of this year's Llandegla Dash in the Dark races. Simon was 17th home with Mandy in 80th place.

Saturday's parkruns were overshadowed by the Cheshire 10k at Arley hall where there were pbs for:

  • Odilia Briceno Plummer
  • Janice Eastwood
  • Sue Evans
  • Paul Evans
  • Elizabeth Featherstone
  • Sarah Gill
  • Gary Gray
  • Peter Holmes
  • Liz Rankin
  • Simon Roberts
  • Natalie Stevenson
  • Martin Lane
  • Sheridan Lane

Well done, all!

I've just learned that Rob Ingham and James Rainbow ran in the Jinlye Jog on Thursday night.

Cross Country results will appear in due course.

6th November

Also in action last weekend were Martin and Sheridan Lane. They both ran the Tatton 10k. Martin setting a new pb - well done, Martin!

4th November

Saturday saw round 1 of this year's Winter Handicap at Shrewsbury as part of the parkrun there. Although 12 Whippets ran at Shrewsbury 3 didn't provide a predicted time - or wore disqualifying technology! James Rainbow the organiser writes:

"9 Whippets took part in the first round of the Winter Handicap this morning. Run of the round was Janice, who was only 1 second out which was a fantastic effort. Katie was second and Paul was third. Still all to play for and round 3 is 1st Dec. Remember you count your best 3 rounds out of the four, so still time to compete for the overall title if you missed this morning."

Winter Handicap

Members also ran at seven other parkruns with pbs being set by Georgina Fowles, Natalie Stevenson and Graham Sturrock. Well run, all.

29th October

Three Whippets took on the challenging Snowdonia Marathon on Saturday. Jo Grandfield says it was a great experience; Mark Gregory and James Rainbow have not ventured an opinion! Anyway, Jo had a great run placing 2nd in her age category. Well done, all.

Yesterday saw just Paul Evans take part in the Bridgnorth 10k.

I'll be posting the updated Standards for the year later today. If you have gained a Standard can you please attend the Birthday Bash - or get someone else to collect your mug and certificate. Club Standards 2018

28th October

Whippets are still in action around the globe; Rob, Fi and Nikki did the Kiwanis parkrun in Canada on Saturday while Ali Dolphin did one at Western Springs NZ. Closer to home there were pbs for Paul Evans at the Whammy and Julie Hollins at Shrewsbury - well done, both!

I've just done a check on Standards and Paul's run at the Whammy has moved him up from Blue to Black - that's what i call leaving it late! The Bridgnorth 10k this morning would have been the very last opportunity for most of you this year! It looks like we'll be giving out close on 40 mugs on the 16th November. Best get your ticket quick!

25th October

Tickets for the Birthday Bash at the Rugby Club on the 16th November are now on sale. Tickets cost £10 and can be obtained from Adam Richards, Dean Richards and Simon Phillips. Please buy your tickets in advance so that we know how many people we need to cater for!

Some of you will be thinking of entering the ballot for the one London Marathon place in our gift. The very strict rules and application form for entering the ballot to be held at the Birthday Bash are here: Marathon Ballot

22nd October

Venturing much further away over the weekend, Rob Moyse, Fi Leatham and Nikki Shingler were racing in the Toronto Waterfront series. Rob and Fi ran the Marathon while Nikki did the 5k. Rob setting a pb. Also racing in the half mararthon in Toronto was local runner Felicity Beddoes from Wem - not a club member, but someone you might know. Shropshire folk, don't half get about!

21st October

With the main event of the weekend being the North Wales XC League at Colwyn Bay, there weren't too many Whippets in parkrun action yesterday. There were pbs for Lyndsey Cotton at Shrewsbury and Charlotte Dolphin at the Stewart parkrun in Middlesborough - well done, both!

There was also a new parkrun venue - the Henley Wood parkrun at Oswestry. This brand new addition to the parkrun series saw half a dozen Whippets show support.

To my great surprise, the XC results are already out! Dean Richards led home a small but complete team of male runners that also included Simon Phillips Shaun Burgess and Andy Heath. Jo Grandfield, Janet Burgess and Liz Rankin completed our women's team. As a result, the men have dropped one place to 8th in their division while the Women have risen to 14th. That's the most distant fixture out of the way - so we should start to make further headway at the next fixture in Wrexham on the 10th November. But it will take more people to be on the starting line.

Cross Country

18th October

While you were paddling round Farndon, these guys were enjoying a relaxing day in Palma.

Never mind, there's always next year's away trip!

Palma 10k 2018
Palma 10k 2018

16th October

I'm glad you're all alert - looks like I was premature in saying there were no pbs at Farndon. It's an age thing - I must have been looking at an old report! There were pbs for:

Odilia Briceno Plummer
Julie Collins
Zara Elson
Sue Evans
Paul Evans
Rob Moyse
Natalie Stevenson
Graham Sturrock

Of particular note is Zara Elson who smashed over 7 minutes off her pb.

There were also new standards reached:

  • Gold - Leah Leonard
  • Bronze - Rob Moyse
  • Black - Sue Evans
  • Black - Natalie Stevenson
  • Purple - Zara Elson
  • Purple - Garry Norton

Well done to all of you.

15th October

Yesterday saw the final race in this year's club championship. 26 Whippets ran in the Farndon 10k. No pbs to report but it has settled the club championship. The top 3 in each category being:

  1. 302.50 Shaun Burgess
  2. 288.58 Simon Phillips
  3. 285.74 Paul White

  1. 325.81 Mimi Owen
  2. 308.39 Jo Grandfield
  3. 302.35 Leah Leonard

Congratulations to our new club Champions Mimi Owen and Shaun Burgess. It was a very close competition this year with 93 members recording at least one result.

The full table is here: Club Championship

Further afield, Dean Richards, Katie Evans, Janice Owen and Peter Holmes enjoyed an away 10k in Palma where it looks like the weather was rather drier!

Closer to home Rob Ingham and James Rainbow took part in the Briedden Hills Fell Race. No doubt they will be well prepared for the 2nd fixture in the North wales XC League this coming weekend in Colwyn Bay. After the first fixture the men are 7th in their Division and the Women 17th. Full teams will help us move up. Departing from the Rugby club at a time to be decided very soon.

14th October

Only five Whippets ran in Saturday's park runs and they were well spread, running at Oxford, Newark, Heslington, Shrewsbury and Taupo New Zealand. No pbs to report.

8th October

Whippets took part in both the Chester Metric and Full Marathon's yesterday. Dave Thornton along with Paul and Darren Evans took part in the Metric version of the race - 26.2 km (16.3 miles.) Rob Ingham and Liz Featherstone both made their Marathon debuts in fine style. They were accompanied by Mimi Owen, Duncan Meredith and Mandy Lewis. Both Duncan and Mandy setting new pbs.

Mimi, who was our first runner home, was representing England Masters in the Marathon.  She writes:

"There were 9 ladies selected to run in the FV60 England Masters team, we all started and finished, I came 5th in our group, though only 8th in the overall category. The first 3 VF60 ladies ran sub 3 hours 30 minutes! I was very pleased with my result as I know I gave it my all!"
Well done to all Whippets

7th October

I'm still waiting for the XC results from Baschurch and will report on the Chester races tomorrow. Because of those two fixtures, there were few Whippets in parkrun action. Six of our pups could be found running at Telford, Heslington and Erddig. No pbs to report

2nd October

Sunday also saw Whippets running in the two Sandstone Trail races. In the 17 mile race, Leah Leonard was 3rd Woman home (2nd F35-45) and Jo Grandfield was 2nd in the F55-65 category. Peter Holmes, James Gresty and Lee Dale also complete the 17 mile race. Claire Trump and Dave Thornton did the shorter 10 mile version.

1st October

Sunday's fun, for some, was a tough rural race at Apley Estate. Natalie Stevenson headed home the half dozen who completed the 10k challenge. Natalie was joined by Karina Stockton, Paul Evans, Sue Evans, Michelle Purcell and Gary Gray. The 10k was clearly not enough of a challenge for some, as Rob Moyse and Fi Leatham took on the 21k race.

It's good to see so many Whippets putting in some valuable training for next weeks XC race at Baschurch!

30th September

Yesterday saw the Shrewsbury parkrun celebrate its fifth year. Whippets in fancy dress turned out in good numbers to show their appreciation. It might just help explain some of the unusual race times! There were still pbs for Sarah Gill and Graham Sturrock. While James Walker also set a new pb in Southport.

This morning, a healthy breakfast at the Raven Cafe was preceded by the last of this Summer's Magic Miles. There were pbs for Sarah Berry and Pam Hamilton.

Don't forget that next Saturday sees the first fixture in this year's North Wales XC League at Baschurch. Cross Country

25th September

Two more results from the weekend deserve a mention. Mimi Owen was first in her age category at the Abersoch Half and James Rainbow ran the Loch Ness Marathon.

24th September

With just 5 weeks until the end of the Standards year, I thought I'd let you know what the current position is. To date these are the standards to be awarded in November, but there's still time to gain a standard or improve on what's shown. The key is to make sure that you've done three different race distances since last October. If you're name's not on the list then you've either not improved on previous years or not done 3 different race distances!

23rd September

A quiet weekend on the parkrun front with only 7 Whippets in action. Furthest from home was Ali Dolphin at Tauranga in New Zealand. Closer to home , there were pbs for Pam Hamilton and Nicola Rogers.

23rd September

The Severn Bridges 10k was cancelled at short notice because of rising river levels, and only Jon Morgan ran the Macclesfield Half. so it would have been a quiet weekend but for this:

Fiona Leatham writes:

"I'm just sending you a link to the results for Equinox 24 hour relay. Whitchurch Wonders (myself, Liz F, Liz R, and Katie Webster and Mandy Lewis) entered as a small team, we completed 4 (10k) running laps each and although only I got a time for the 5th lap (because you can only have one runner recorded at a time) we all walked the 10k route together to finish off the 24 hours so we all covered 50k in total.
I was particularly pleased to complete such a distance after missing a lot of training over the past month. "

And here's the link:

Equinox Relay

18th September

The weekend also saw the English Half Marathon series in Warrington. Nikki Shingler took on the challenge of running the 5k on Friday, the 10k on Saturday and the wireFm mile on Sunday! Nikki recorded a pb in the 10k! Well done.

Running in the Half Marathon on Sunday were Mimi Owen, Susan and Ed Vine, Janice Eastwood and Chell Scrase. The quality of the field can be gauged by the fact that Mimi placed 6th in her category with a time of 1:48:10 (79.78%).

17th September

Leah Leonard was first lady home in the Tilston 10k yesterday - congratulations, Leah! There were only a handful of Whippets running, but there were pbs for Natalie Stevenson and Karina Stockton. Well done, both.

I am aware that a number of you ran the English Half Marathon and other races in Warrington - but results haven't yet appeared. I'll catch up on them tomorrow.

James Rainbow has also alerted me to the final standings in the Shropshire Summer Fell race series. James writes:

"We were all very impressed with our results, especially as its only our first full season at Fell racing (against 332 runners who took part in at least one race):"

56 – Rob Ingham (7 races)
71 – Pete Holmes (6 races)
76 – James Rainbow (7 races)
180- Simon Phillips (1 race)
276 – Jo Grandfield (2 races)
326 - Simon Roberts (1 race)

16th September

Yesterday's parkrun at Shrewsbury was a Club Championship qualifying race and saw 11 Whiptes run. Whippets were also in action at Telford, Crewe, Cassiobury and the Whammy. In all 9 new pbs were set by:

Charlotte Dolphin
Zara Elson
Sue Evans
Julie Hollins
Simon Huxley
Janice Owen
Nicola Rogers
Esther Smith
James Walker

Well done, all.

The top positions in the Championship are unchanged as we head to the Macclesfield Half on the 23rd September. The Magic Mile on the 30th and the Farndon 10k on the 14th October will complete the series.

12th September

I'm still waiting for the Sexarathon standings to appear. But in the meantime, one more result from last week. James Rainbow ran the Stretton Skyline Fell race in 4:39:39. for the record this tough challenge is: a 19 mile / 30.5 km and  4,450'/ 1357m climb and FRA category B Long race. (Telford Website). So, pretty much a cross country marathon!

Which reminds me that that season starts soon - the First North Wales XC league match is on the 6th October at Baschurch. Races are free and open to all first claim club members. The vast majority of you are First Claim Members - only those who also belong to other running clubs may not be. You probably know who you are!

Full details of the league here Cross Country

10th September

The big race of the weekend was the Lake Vyrnwy Half, but a bunch of Whippets also did the RAF Shawbury 10k.

Lake Vyrnwy saw Paul White and Katie Webster our first finishers. There were pbs for :

Odilia Briceno Plummer
Lee Dale
Janice Eastwood
Sarah Gill
John Haley
Pam Hamilton
Peter Holmes
Sid Paul
Simon Roberts
Michael Starkey
Paul White

Shawbury saw pbs for Charlotte Dolphin, Gary Gray, Nicola Rogers and Natalie Stevenson.

Lake Vyrnwy was a championship race and as a result the leaderboards show:

  1. 302.50 Shaun Burgess
  2. 288.58 Simon Phillips
  3. 285.74 Paul White

  1. 325.81 Mimi Owen
  2. 308.39 Jo Grandfield
  3. 302.32 Leah Leonard

The next qualifying race is the Shrewsbury parkrun on the 15th September. The Macclesfield Half is on the 23rd September and the Farndon 10k on the 14th October. there is also a final Magic Mile on Sunday 30th September.

Club Championship

9th September

Yesterday saw very few Whippets in parkrun action, but that was more than made up for by Nikki Shingler smashing through the 40 minute barrier to record a new pb of 38:33! Brilliant result, Nikki! Very well deserved.

6th September

James Rainbow writes:

I am pleased to announce the dates of the upcoming winter handicap, which we are starting a month early this time. Its exactly the same format as previous years (full rules are on the webpage) but essentially predict how fast you will run the Shrewsbury Park Run and then run as close a time to that as possible but without a watch or other technology! It doesnt have to be your PB, it could be your slower recovery run pace. I will be at the band stand before each round, to take your predictions. We have a backup date for each round, in case the park run is cancelled due to weather or if a pacer event is held that week. Good luck.

Round 1: Sat 3rd Nov (backup 17 Nov)

Round 2: Sat 1st Dec (backup 22nd Dec)

Round 3: Sat 19 Jan (backup 26th Jan)

Round 4: Sat 9th Feb (backup 23rd Feb).

Winter Handicap

5th September

A couple of changes to the final Club Championship races. The Cheshire Half at Arley no longer seeems to be happening so has been replaced as a Championship event by the Macclesfield Half on the 23rd September. There will also be a final Magic Mile on Sunday 30th September.

4th September

Weather conditions were perfect for the 4th Magic Mile tonight, which probably explains why 16 pbs were set by the 23 who ran! Well done, all who took part and thanks to all who helped.

For the record, here are the pb earners:

Charlotte Dolphin

Sue Evans

Paul Evans

Gary Gray

John Haley

Pam Hamilton

Peter Holmes

Julie Hollins

Elizabeth Lindsay-Gould

Joanna Lloyd

Katie Prince

Nicola Rogers

Nikki Shingler

Esther Smith

Natalie Stevenson

3rd September

I'm not having much luck with results at the moment. So far, the only result I have from yesterday is from the Cosford Spitfire 10k where Ali Dolphin was 2nd L60. Well done, Ali

Don't forget it's Magic Mile time tomorrow. Hopefully see many of you running.

2nd September

Before I get on to the parkrun results, just to let you know that Mimi was 2nd and Jo Grandfield 3rd in their age categories at the Ellesmere Port RC 5k a few weeks back. Mimi was also 2nd in her age category at the Mid Cheshire 5k and 1st in the Ellerdine Effort 5k on Wednesday. Mimi also set a new Club Age Record in the Ellerdine Effort 5k! Well done, both.

Paul White has also had a good weekend, setting a new M35 Age Record for the 5k at the Whammy Parkrun. Well done, Paul! There were also pbs this weekend for Charlotte Dolphin, Gary Gray, Narg Harris, Natalie Stevenson and Corrina Stockton. Good running, folks.

Oh, and I'm still waiting for Janice Owen's Elllesmere 10k result to be corrected.

1st September

I'm still waiting for Janice Owen's Ellesmere 10k time but in the meantime here's a list of PBs I know about for the period from 14th to 31st August. Janice's Ellesmere 10k will also be a pb. Well done all!

31st August

Okay - I've had a first stab at the Ellesmere 10k results by picking through all 766 listed. Apologies, but I'm sure that I will have missed someone. Janice Owen's time needs adjusting and will be added as soon as we know what it actually was.

Please email me ( if I've missed you - you're not the person I've included - or your time is wrong!

This has not been fun!

30th August

I'm still hoping for a set of Ellesmere 10k results to appear with club names! I'm not keen to weed through 766 results in the hope that I can correctly identify Whippets. It's entirely possible that someone from another club with the same name as a Whippet may have run. I'll give it a day or so - then you may have to help me out. I'm not happy as I know you want your results added to the Championship etc

In the meantime, James Rainbow writes:

"Pete (Holmes), Rob (Ingham) and I ran in the Ragleth fell race, which was the final round of the Shropshire Summer Fell Race Series. It was called Ragleth after the Inn and not the hill, as we ended up climbing to the top of Callow twice. After the previous 6 races being run in dry and sunny (occasionally hot) conditions, this was overcast with steady rain and drizzle, which made some the descents a little more exciting! It was a great course (2.8 miles with 1300 Ft ascent) and we were really pleased with our results we even managed to smile for a team photo! Overall series results arent available yet."

29th August

Right, I'm back off holiday now and will be catching up on results over the next few days. As I write this, the official Ellesmere 10k Results have not been posted on the UKA site. Given a query I've received, I won't be doing anything about the Ellesmere Results until they've been confirmed.

If I've missed a result for any race other than the Ellesmere 10k, Race The Train or Ragleth please let me know. I've already updated parkruns and the Mid Cheshire 5k.

13th August

The swankiest park run award for August must go to Fi and Rob who did the Bois de Boulogne parkrun. That's apparently somewhere in Europe. Or perhaps I'm misjudging the Stewart Middlesborough parkrun!

Anyway, there were pbs for Charlotte Dolphin, John Haley Lesley smith and Nikki Shingler. Nikki's getting ever closer to that 40 minute barrier - it won't be long now. Well done, all.

10th August

James Rainbow writes:

"Pete Holmes, Rob Ingham and I ran in the Middletown Fell race last night. Words wouldnt really do the race course justice(!), suffice to say in only 1.8 miles we went to the top of Middletown hill twice (1290 FT / 390M of climbing) and my average pace was 22 mins / mile!! Numbers were down on recent fell races, with only 35 finishers."

9th August

Ideal weather conditions saw 13 pbs set by the 22 Whippets who contested the 3rd Magic Mile!! A stunning result. The happy runners were: Harry Blake, Frankee Bolas, Shaun Burgess, Sarah Clorley, Sue Evans, Pam Hamilton, Martin Lane, Saul Mellor, Duncan Meredith, Rob Moyse, Nikki Shingler, Lesley Smith and Natalie Stevenson.

Harry Blake was the first man home in 5:36 with Janet Burgess heading the ladies in 6:53.The next mile is on the 4th September.

7th August

I know some of you have been waiting with baited breath, so here's the Summer Handicap result - our series winner for 2018 is Zara Elson! An exciting final race saw Odilia Brisceno Plummer and Pam Hamilton tie for 2nd place in the series. Well done all three!

The cooler conditions made for good racing and no finish was more enjoyed than Nikki Shingler's victory in tonight's race. Her face as she crosssed the line was a picture of delight (I think) and pain! Nikki took 58 seconds off her predicted time - a fantastic achievement and best run of the night.

Anyway, you can see all the stats here: Summer Handicap

6th August

Paul Evans ran in the Cannock Chase Trail 10k yesterday and writes:

" ...think I was the only Whippet daft enough to do this. My first trail race, brutal in yesterday's heat. A very hilly 10k trail baptism. Lots of suffering but looking back enjoyed something different. No pb haha but happy with 1.01.53."

5th August

We had our own school of Dolphins running at the Shrewsbury parkrun yesterday - I'm not sure if Ali and Charlotte have yet properly met. But they're rare sights in these waters! Anyway, Whippets were also running at Delamere, Erdigg and Swansea.

There were pbs for Lee Dale, Charlotte Dolphin, Zara Elson and Saul Mellor. Saul didn't have his barcode so was not given an official time for his 14th place immediately behind Dean. I've therefore credited him with the same time as the 15th person, which would have been a few seconds slower than Saul actually ran. There's a lesson there, Saul.

Don't forget that we're at John's on Tuesday for the climax of the Handicap series. Then on Thursday there's another Magic Mile

4th August

For those of you who like to look at these things in advance, I've just posted the handicaps for Tuesday. Summer Handicap

Happy running!

31st July

I've updated the club standards page to show the new standards achieved up to the end of July. There's still time for people to qualify for a Standard or to improve on a Standard they've already reached.

All you really need to know is that you need to race over 3 different distances from a choice of: 1 Mile, 5k or Parkrun, 10k,  Half Marathon or Marathon. Hint: pick your best 3 distances and run as hard as you can! Club Standards

Special mention must go out to Shaun Burgess who has reached Gold Standard - and there aren't too many of those in the club!

30th July

Sixteen Whippets contested the Helena Tipping 10k as rain finally returned to the country. Sarah Berry, Janice Eastwood, Srah Gill, Pam Hamilton and Susan Vine all set new Pbs - well done, all.

It was a club championship race and as a the result the current top 3 in each category are:

  1. 302.27 Shaun Burgess
  2. 283.08 Paul White
  3. 273.98 Dean Richards

  1. 302.23 Leah Leonard
  2. 259.77 Liz Featherstone
  3. 253.59 Janet Burgess

The next championship races are the Magic Mile on the 9th August, Ellesmere Port RC 5k on 15th August, Ellesmere 10k on 26th August and the Lake Vyrnwy Half on the 9th September.

The big question is, will John Dillon and Mimi Owen complete the races needed to mount a challenge? But there are still other members who can grab a podium spot - watch out for Simon Phillips, Jon Morgan and Jo Grandfield!

29th July

There was a great gathering of 19 Whippets at Erddig for Saturday's parkrun. Lyndsey Cotton, Nicola Rogers. Lesley smith and Natalie Stevenson all setting pbs - well done!

Elsewhere, Katie Webster ran at Shrewsbury, Ali Dolphin at Upton House and James Walker at Ellesmere Port. Today sees Whippets in the Helena Tipping 10k in Wrexham. Results for that one wil be posted tomorrow.

It was also good to see a large number of Whippets enjoyng the interval session with the Tri club on Thursday - or was it the chip butties and cakes that provided the attraction? Still, it bodes well for the Autumn sessions that Fi will soon be organising - hills, lovely hills! You'll be well spoiled this Autumn. See our updated  Training page.

25th July

Race 3 in the Handicap series saw Zara Elson record another maximum leaving her firm favourite for the title. Great run Zara, but the handicapper will catch up with you eventually!

The first four runners home were all very new members and therefore don't count in the Handicaps series, but well run: Julie Hollins, Corrina Stockton, Nikki Ryder and Charlotte Dolphin.

Pamela Hamilton and Odilia Briceno Plummer lie in 2nd and 3rd place in the series but it's not a done deal as some runners have only completed two races and could still sneak into the reckoning. It looks to me like there's still a chance for a tie at the top!

Handicap results from last night are here: Summer Handicap

The final race is on the 7th August.

24th July

On Thursday, 26th, we have been invited over to SJT to run with the Tri Club. Bob Wilson has planned an interval session that will be suitable for all. If you fancy it, and haven't replied on facebook, please email Bob wants an idea of numbers.

23rd July

Yesterday, Whippets were in action in the Shrewsbury 10k and the Race for Life series at Cholmondley Castle. There were pbs for Sarah Berry and Jane Davies at Shrewsbury and for Jo Cornes and Katie Prince in the Cholmondeley Half. Liz Rankin and Sarah Gill ran the 5k at Cholmondeley while Sue Evans did the 10k. I'm not sure if official results will appear for those events - charity races are quite often a nuisance in that respect!

See you at the Handicap tomorrow.

22nd July

Yesterdays parkruns saw pbs for Narg Harris, Elizabeth Lindsay-Gould, Nicola Rogers and Esther Smith. Well done, all.

Updated Sexarathon standings show that Jo Grandfield is currently lying 2nd in the v55 Ladies category and Mimi Owen 3rd in the v60 Ladies category. Sadly, Mimi missed the first two races or she would probably be leading. There is still one race left in the series.

21st July

Thursday saw the 2nd of this summer's Magic Miles with a clutch of pbs from the 27 runners. There were first time bests for Odilia Briceno Plummer, Lee Dale, Natalie Stevenson and Markus Monro and new bests for Sue Evans, Paul Evans, John Haley, Pam Hamilton, Peter Holmes, Janice Owen, Nikki Shingler and Michael Starkey. Well done, all. The next race is on the 9th August.

Wednesday saw James Rainbow, Peter Holmes and Rob Ingham take part in the Stiperstones Fell Race. James writes:

"The usual 3 suspects (Pete, Rob and myself) ran the Stiperstones Fell Race, which was round 6 of the Shropshire Fell Summer series. It was another cracking race but was probably the most technical terrain so far. The final descent was steep and loose underfoot and apparently as Rob missed a  right turn it allowed Pete to overtake! At 3.7 miles with approx. 1200 FT of climbing it was short and sharp. Round 7 is Middletown in a few weeks."

Don't forget that Tuesday sees round 3 of the Handicap series at John Dillon's.

16th July

I'm only aware of parkruns for the weekend just gone. There were pbs for Rob Moyse (Bryn Bach) and Claire Trump (Killerton). Well done, both.

Let me know if you raced elsewhere.

Don' forget, it's Magic Mile time on Thursday. See you at the finish line!

13th July

Last night saw another great relay race at Alderford Lake. A big thank you to all the competitors and helpers who helped make it a great night. Fortunately we got it all packed away before the heavens opened.

The relay results are here: Grocontinental Relay 2018 Results

One result from Wednesday night, no - not that one! Simon Phillips was the only Whippet in the Druid's Fell race placing 22nd.

11th July

This Saturday's Club Championship qualifying parkrun at Shrewsbury will have to be rescheduled as the parkrun has been cancelled.

8th July

Whippets were well spread out round the country in yesterday's parkruns. Seven took part in the Social parkrun at Cannock chase but a further 11 ran in 8 other locations. You're not making my job easy, guys! Anyway, despite the heat there were pbs for Sarah Berry, Charlotte Dolphin, Janice Eastwood, Gary Gray and Nicola Rogers, well done all! It was also good to see Michael McKeown back in race results.

4th July

Despite a fixture clash with an event in Moscow, 26 Whippets and a couple of guests still braved the hot weather to take on the 2.4 mile course in Bronington. Sara Berry was first home. Fastest times of the night were posted by Paul White (14:35) and Jo Cornes (18:44). After 2 rounds Zara Elson leads with 97 points but it's all still to play for. The next race is on the 24th July.

Summer Handicap

3rd July

Paul White also raced on Sunday. He recorded 1:38:17 in the Southport Half Marathon

2nd July

Just a few results to catch up on. Last Wednesday a group of Whippets took part in the Ironbridge 4 - round 4 of the Telford AC Sexarathon series. After 4 races, Jo Grandfield is lying 2nd in the v55 category just 16 points down on the leader. Mimi is 3rd in the V60 category.  Also running on Wednesday were Keith Cotton, Rob Ingham, Rob Moyse, Katie Webster and Fi Leatham. Apparently it was warm.

The only result I have from the weekend, other than parkruns, is Pam Hamilton setting a 10k pb in the Alderley Edge Bypass 10k. This follows up the 10k she did at Colshaw Hall a few weeks back. Well done, Pam!

Don't forget that we'll be at Mr Dillon's for the Handicap tomorrow. Meeting at the Rugby Club as normal for lifts.

1st July

I guess yesterday was too hot for many of you to fancy racing - and no bad thing! Anyway, the Shrewsbury parkrun was a championship qualifying event that saw 8 Whippets take part. Whippets were also in action at Longrun Meadow (Taunton), Conwy, Erddig and Ludlow. No pbs to report.

Championship positions didn't change. The next Championship qualifying race is the Shrewsbury parkrun on the 14th July. Club Championship

Don't forget that Tuesday sees round 2 of the Summar Handicap at John Dillon's place in Bronnington.Summer Handicap

27th June

Phew! What a scorcher. Last night's Magic Mile must have been the hottest we've ever had, but it didn't hurt performances with 26 pbs being set among the 33 who ran. Too many to list, but well done all of you!

It was also a championship event and as a result here are the current  top 3 for each side of the club:

Leah Leonard

Mimi Owen

Liz Featherstone

Shaun Burgess

Dean Richards

Duncan Meredith

The next Championship Race is the Parkrun at Shrewsbury on Saturday - 30th June Club Championship

It's also a good opportunity to catch up with Club Standards. Shaun Burgess has just qualified for a well deserved Gold Standard, while there are hard earned standards for another 19 of you! Well done one and all. Find out more about club standards here: Club Standards

25th June

Just a couple of races to report, so far. Shaun Burgess and Michael Starkey did the Stone 10k in the heat yesterday. Michael setting a new pb of 51:27. Well done.

Further North, Liz Featherstone, Rob Moyse, Dvae Thornton and Fiona Leatham did the Hadrian's Wall Half. A bit too tough for pbs, methinks.

24th June

There was some great running at the Whammy parkrun yesterday with Charlotte Dolphin and Nikki Shingler setting new pbs - Nikki taking over 2 minutes off her 5k best! Well done, both. John Dillon and Dean Richards also had good runs, with John setting an 83.5% performance. Whippets were also in action at Prudhoe Riverside, Ellesmere Port, Ludlow and Erddig.

Don't forget that this Tuesday sees the first of this year's "Magic Mles" - a gentle downhill run filled with love and inspiration in verdant countryside. Meeting at the rugby club at the normal time.

22nd June

And another mid-week race result. Rob Moyse and Fiona Leatham did the Warrington 10k last night with Rob setting a new PB of 48:47. Well done, Rob.

21st June

Simon Phillips, James Rainbow, Rob Ingham and Jo Grandfield took part in the hilly Pontesbury Fell race last night. Simon was 29th, with Jo second in her age group.

18th June

Sunday found Whippets racing in the Shrewsbury Half and the Port Sunlight 10k. James Rainbow set a10k PB at Port Sunlight and Odilia Briceno-Plummer a Half Marathon PB at Shrewsbury. Odilia was accompanied by Paul White, Shaun Burgess, Sarah Berry and Duncan Meredith while Katie Webster was running with James.

I nearly missed a result from last wednesday - thanks to Sue Evans for alerting me! Eleven Whippets ran the Shropshire 4 in the Sexarathon series. Sadly, they don't seem to be publishing the standings so i can't tell you how anyone is doing in the series. Next race is on the 27th June at Ironbridge - the day after the first of this year's magic miles.

17th June

Our very successful Couch to 5k course finished on Thursday and it was fantastic to see so many of the participants take part in the Telford parkrun yesterday. Altogether 32 people ran under the Whippet name!

The very sharp eyed among the Couch to 5k runners may spot that their Age graded percentages look a litlle bit low. That's because I don't yet have your full details. Once I have your correct age, future results will be correctly graded. So, get those membership forms in quick!

I will also have missed anyone who didn't put down that they were a Whitchurch Whippet when registering with parkrun.

All of these Couch to 5k participants set pbs on Saturday:

Rachel Corlett

Charlotte Dolphin

Julie Hollins

Christine Houston

Frank Houston

Elizabeth Lindsay-Gould

Tracey Pyke

Lesley Smith

Valerie Smither

Nicola Storey

There were also pbs for

Narg Harris

Martin Lane

Paul Evans

Congratulations, one and all!

Last Wednesday saw the Park Hall 5k with just Simon Phillips and John Dillon running from the Whippets. Simon was 28th and John 33rd.

14th June

On Tuesday 19th June we have invited Whitchurch Tri Club to join us for a social run. As usual there will be a range of distances/paces. Following training, chip butties will be served in the Rugby Club.

11th June

It was great to see fifteen Whippets take part in the Social parkrun at Erddig on Saturday. There was just the one pb for Narg Harris. Well done, Narg! Whippets also ran at Bushy Park, Shrewsbury and Peacehaven.

Yesterday saw Fi and Rob complete a very hot Potter's 'Arf - I watched the French Open and Canadian Grand Prix.

In case you missed it, the fledgling Fell running section of the club were in action at the Rodney Pillar Fell race on Wednesday. Taking part were Peter Holmes, Rob Ingham, James Rainbow and Jo Grandfield. You're all welcome to join them on their next hilly adventure!

6th June

The Summer Handicap kicked off in great style with Zara Elson romping home in first place. So, all those chatty races were just a clever ploy to fool the handicapper! A fantastic 42 runners took part with Paul White (13:59) and Leah Leonard (17:51) setting the fastest times.

The next round is on the 3rd July Summer Handicap

3rd June

Only 9 whippets did a parkrun yesterday. There were no pbs but Keith Cotton wins the prize for running furthest from Whitchurch. His run at Meadowvale was in Mississauga,Canada!

Don't forget that Tuesday ses the first Handicap of the Summer at John Dillon's in Bronington. Unless you go straight there, cars will be departing from the Rugby Club.

I've just posted the handicap times that Simon Phillips has been slaving over all weekend - enjoy! Summer Handicap

1st June

For those that couldn't make the AGM or haven't heard, the club is now open to people aged 16 and over!

29th May

Dean Richards writes:

Just to let you know Katie and I were racing in London at the weekend. I did the Westminster mile on Sunday, 5.31 on a slightly long course, 1.03m, a my wave had to take the right hand line on two of the 90 degrees left corners.... And we ran the Vitality London 10000 on Sunday in 59.43, in a race pace to perfection as Katie managed a negative split (30.05 through 5k).

Over 8000 completed the mile and 14000 in the 10k along with some famous faces (Lord Seb Coe taking part in both, Mo Farah and Calum Hawkins in the 10k and Jessica Ennis-Hill starting the 10k also)

We both enjoyed the weekend and will probably head down again next year

27th May

Only ten Whippets did parkruns yesterday but they still managed to run at six different venues! Nikki Shingler continued her run of improvement, setting another PB at Shrewsbury while Michael Starkey raced to a PB at Hanley. Well done, both!

Don't forget that Tuesday sees the Club AGM at the Rugby Club after training. It's going to be an important meeting with a vote to be held on lowering the club membership age to 16.

25th May

The Alderford Relay is closing in on us. We are looking for volunteers who can help out on the night or help mark out the course during the afternoon. If you are able to help can you please email

24th May

James Rainbow writes:

Three Whippets (Rob, Pete and myself) competed in the Batch Bash Fell race last night, which was round 3 of the Shropshire Summer Fell race series. It was 3.4miles with ~1000 FT of climbing around Little Stretton and the last very steep climb before the finish was particularly difficult! The views from the top (1250 FT) were stunning and it was a beautiful evening to spend with like minded Whippets! Round 4 is Rodney Pillar race in a few weeks.

I think we are now 3 new members of the Fell running wing of the Whitchurch Whippets, as we seem to have caught the bug.

22nd May

Over the next few months Google are effectively forcing all websites to become encrypted. As a result, I will be making the necessary changes tomorrow. There shouldn't be a problem - but you never know!  So, there is a chance there may be some disruption to the site. I'll let you know when it's all sorted. If I've screwed it up, I'll let you know what's going on through facebook.

For those of you that like to know these things, the full web address (RL) will be changing to from

21st May

Despite the sweltering weather, Whippets were still hard at it over the weekend. Tracey and Ross Kennedy completed the Great Manchester 10k. It was Tracey's first 10k - well done, Tracey. There were also pbs for Nikki Shingler in the Telford PR and Paul Evans in the Liverpolo Rock n Roll Half.

A tougher challenge was faced by a pack of Whipets who took on the Snowdonia half marathon. No pbs - unsurprisingly - but a magnificent 2nd place in her age group for Jo Grandfield. Jo was accompanied by Mark Gregory, Duncan Meredith and Liz Featherstone. Paul White was also in action on Sunday in the Windermere Marathon. Paul had a good run just 6 minutes off the time he set in Manchester. Paul says there was an elevation gain of 1864 feet! That would slow one down a bit.

Don’t forget that as an alternative to normal training on Tuesday (22nd) we’ll be meeting up at the Bickerton Poacher at 7pm. If you want to share lifts we’ll also be meeting at the Rugby Club to leave by 6:40pm.

19th May

There was great weather for the Christleton 5k last night. This prestigious fast race saw Shaun Burgess, Sarah Gill, Peter Holmes, Duncan Meredith and Paul White all set new pbs. The top 28 runners broke 16 minutes with the winner from Liverpool Harriers running 14:43! Despite recording an 83.57% run, John Dillon was 4th in his age group. Which just goes to show the quality fo the field this race attracts! Well done, all.

This was a club championship race and the top 3 in each category are currently:

Men: Shaun Burgess, Dean Richards and Duncan Meredith

Women: Leah Leonard, Liz Featherstone and Janet Burgess

The next club championship races are the Park Hall 5k on the 13th June and Shrewsbury Half on the 17th June

15th May

Leah Leonard and Mandy Lewis did the Helsby Sandstone Trail Challenge on Saturday. Leah was 9th home and first woman - covering the 33 miles in 5 hours 1 minutes! With 193 taking part, Mandy was 96th in a time of 8:32. Well done, both! Time for a cup of tea and a biscuit.

14th May

The Market Drayton 10k was again well supported on Sunday with 25 Whippets running. There were pbs for Odilia Briceno Plummer, Lisa Dale, Sue Evans, Pam Hamilton, Simon Huxley, Rob Moyse and Nikki Shingler. Well done, all! It's good to see a number of our newer members racing.

There were no pbs set at any of the parkruns on Saturday. Alongside the Social parkrun at Wepre, Whippets ran at Chester, Shrewsbury, Ellesmere Port, Heslington, Erddig and Whitby.

11th May

James Rainbow writes:

Four of us (Rob Ingham, Peter Homes, Simon Roberts and myself) ran the Wrekin Streak fell race on Wednesday night. It was 2.7 miles straight up and back down the Wrekin, which included 247M of climbing - it was one race were we all ran negative splits! We all really enjoyed it.

7th May

Saturday's parkruns saw Paul White home 7th at Telford setting a new pb of 18:56. There were also pbs for Katie Evans (Shrewsbury), Alex Glover (Erddig), Simon Roberts (The Wammy) and Nikki Shingler (The Wammy). Well done, all!

Sunday saw Shaun Burgess, Rachael Foster, Michael Starkey and Ali Dolphin run the Llangollen 10k, but I'm guessing the heat wasn't a great help!

2nd May

The club AGM will be held at the Rugby Club on Tuesday 29th May @ 20:15. Invite and Agenda will be emailed out shortly. Chip butties will follow the AGM.

30th April

There was a great turnout for the Chester Half yesterday - but I may not have all of the results just yet. What I do know, is that Paul White was first home for us and that there were pbs for: Shaun Burgess, Janice Eastwood, James Gresty, Rob Moyse, Duncan Raynor, Simon Roberts. Lisa Dale, Ed Vine, Sue Vine and Paul White. Well done, one and all!

29th April

Yesterdays parkruns - too many to list - saw pbs for Sue and Paul Evans, Georgina Fowles, Alex Glover and Claire Wragg. Well done, all!

Here they all are: Results

28th April

There was great running at the highly competitive and fast Mid Cheshire 5k race last night. Best run of the day came from Leah Leonard who was 3rd in her age group setting a new club record of 19:38! We don't see many of those, these days. Great run, Leah. Gareth Dodd was our first male runner home in 17:45. There wee also pbs for Janet Burgess, Sarah Gill, Peter Holmes and James Rainbow. The whippet pack was completed by Dean Richards, Liz Rankin. Jon Morgan, Liz Featherstone and Dave Thornton.

It was also a club championship race, as a result Gareth Dodd has moved into first place with Jon Morgan and Dean just behind. Leah heads Liz Featherstone and Janet Burgess in the ladies. The next championship race is the Chester Half on Sunday. Club Championship

27th April

This year's Couch to 5k course began yesterday with an amazing 56 participants - a record attendance! The weather was kind, if a litlle chilly, but the session went really well and we look forward to many new runners joining the club in due course. Thanks must go to all the coaches and helpers from the club who made the session such a success. Roll on next week - but a little warmer would be nice!

23rd April

Phew, what a scorcher! Despite the hot conditions. 8 Whippets safely completed the London Marathon with Leah Leonard setting a new age record and Paul Evans a PB. They were joined by Jo Grandfield, Mimi Owen, Sid Paul, Jon Morgan, Stephanie Beeston and Louise Baldwin. Well done, all.

22nd April

The Sexarathon series kicked off at Lilleshall last Wednesday and it was great to see 8 Whippets having a go. Keith Cotton was our highest place finisher in 130th place with Jo Grandfield not much further back in 150th. They were joined by Rob Ingham, Liz Featherstone, Simon Roberts, Fiona Leatham, Sue and Paul Evans. Now they've just got to complete the next 5 races in the series!

Yesterday saw a smattering of parkrun performances with Shaun Burgess having the run of the day - knocking 46 seconds off his previous best at Shrewsbury. Outstanding! John Dillon and Gareth Dodds  had better get their racing shoes on or the Championship could be heading elsewhere. Shaun has now knocked nearly 2 minutes off his 5k time in just over a month and is impressing with each race! Well done, Shaun. But be careful not to over-race.

15th April

A very soggy car park frustrated the social parkrun scheduled for Erddig. As a result, Whippets were sniffing the grass and cocking their legs in a variety of locations - the recently discovered flat parkrun called the Wammy proving the most popular.  Dean was 7th and Simon 9th home in that one. All told, there were pbs for Shaun Burgess and Michael Starkey at Shrewsbury and Sarah Gill at the Whammy.

9th April

The weather gods smiled on the 2nd running of the SJT Whitchurch 10k and the 42 Whippets who ran. Leah Leaonard was our first woman home in 35th place winning the F30 category. Shaun Burgess was first home for the men in 45th place. There were no club or age records, but 20 pbs were set! Congratulations to all who completed their first 10k or set a new pb. Here's the roll of honour:

Frankee Bolas
Lisa Dale
Janice Eastwood
Zara Elson
Sue Evans
Kirsty Fisher
Georgina Fowles
Sarah Gill
Alexandra Glover
James Gresty
Peter Holmes
Simon Huxley
Robert Ingham
Catriona McCausland
Janice Owen
Duncan Raynor
Vickie Raynor
Simon Roberts
Nikki Shingler
Clare Wragg

Meanwhile Rob Sharam and Paul White ran the Manchester Marathon, with Rob home in 3:07:24 and Paul setting a pb of 3:23:56.

8th April

Well done at the Whitchurch 10k today. proper write up tomorrow. I've added as many results as I could, but some of you were not down as Whippets - please let me know if I've missed your result. Results

3rd April

We are now in a new membership year, so if you haven't already renewed you need to take action. If you are planning on renewing, the renewal fee is now £25. If you're not planning on renewing can you please let us know.

Jen has renewed all 70 who have already paid up - thank you, folks.

2nd April

There was great running at the Air Products 10k in Crewe yesterday with Mimi first LV60 in 47:21(age graded 82.9%). Shaun Burgess also had a great run setting a pb of 41:09 (75.21%) and moving him into the upper ranks of the Whippets! There were also pbs for Michael Starkey and Liz Rankin while Dean set his fastest time in 5 years. Well done, all!

1st April

As noted, the Shrewsbury results did change after we'd posted the Winter Handicap results. As a result, Dean Richards is our Winter Handicap Champion, with Simon Phillips 2nd and Keith Cotton in 3rd. Congratulations to Dean and Keith, and hard luck to Simon and James who have lost out.

Winter Handicap

I'll post all the park run and other race results tomorrow. An Easter bunny is calling me.

31st March

*** STOP PRESS ***

The Winter Handicap results and write up may need to change as it turns out there was a problem with the Shrewsbury results. We'll confirm or change the results as soon as we know we're dealing with the correct results.

Sorry, folks. We went with the info available at the time.

*** END ***

James Rainbow writes:

12 Whippets ran the delayed final round of the winter handicap, which resembled Oswestry cross country in places with the 2 water obstacles! The extra 4 weeks has helped with the pacing, as five runners were within 15 seconds of their own predicted time. Run of the round was by James, who managed to run his exact predicted time (to make sure it wasn’t a fix, I emailed my time to Simon the webmaster on Friday evening), closely followed by Simon who was 1 second out, then Liz, Dean and Keith.

The overall Winter Handicap series result came down to the last race and congratulations go to Simon Phillips who won the series. He was only an amazing 23 seconds off his predicted time over 3 races – great effort. Dean was second with three very low scores and James was 3rd helped by the minus 10 seconds bonus! Keith and Peter make up the top 5

It was a great series overall with 11 runners contesting 3 rounds and 19 runners contesting at least 1 round.

Winter Handicap

27th March

Also racing on Sunday was Paul Evans who set a pb of 2:08:46 in the London Landmarks Half Marathon. Well done, Paul.

26th March

I've just had a look at results for races in our Race Diary and it looks like no one ran the Ironbridge or Liverpool Half Marathons, but five Whippets did face down the challenge that is the Mortimer Forest Trail Race. This is one of Simon Phillips's favourite races, so it's good that he was first Whippet home. He somehow also persuaded Rob Ingham, Duncan Meredith, Peter Holmes and Liz Featherstone to run!

25th March

Yesterday's parkruns has Whippets running at seven different venues with pbs for Narg Harris and Michael Starkey. Well done, both.

18th March

The mini-beast has put paid to most of today's races - and, sadly for some, the full Grizzly! But the cold weather didn't stop a good number of you from doing the Social Parkrun at Crewe yesterday. Whippets also ran at: Peacehaven, Harrogate, Delamere, Telford, Seaton, Shrewsbury and Heslington. There were pbs for Peter Holmes and Pippa Burchell at Crewe and for Michael Starkey and Shaun Burgess at Telford. Well done all who ran!

I went back into hibernation. See you all when it warms up and stays warm!

12th March

Sadly, a waterlogged car park put paid the Cheshire 10k at Arley Hall. That was to be the main event of the weekend for many, but not all.  Mimi Owen was our sole finisher in the Wrexham Half Marathon, but didn't she do well! Mimi was first in her age group running 1:48:32 - a 78.39% performance. Oh, and she also won a bottle of wine which she was very happy about.

Parkruns saw Whippets running all over the place with Janice Eastwood setting a new PB at Crewe. Well done, Janice.

Finally, it was good to see Tease the Whippet winning at Crufts. I bet we get a lot more enquires about our club as a result.

4th March

There was I thinking no one would bother to get out and race when people managed to do parkruns on Saturday and the Chester 10k on Sunday! Not only that, but the cold seems to make Whippets run well. There were pbs for Shauan Burgess and Michael Starkey at the Crewe parkrun and for Dave Thornton, Janice Eastwood and Katie Prince at Chester. Well done all of you!

Now that the Beast from the East has gone my thoughts are turning to running. If you feel the pavements shake it may be another earthquake or me taking a few tentative steps.

2nd March

I can't imagine any of you are going to be racing this weekend, so here's a stat to motivate you for the warmer days ahead.  Leah Leonard, Jo Grandfield and Mimi Owen all appear in the top 30 rankings by Runbritain for the Half Marathon in their respective age groups. Well done, you three!

28th February

One missed result from Sunday, Kirsty Fisher also ran the Village Bakery Half setting a pb. Well done, Kirsty.

26th February

In case you hadn't heard, the last round of the Winter Handicap will now be on the 31st March at Shrewsbury and not on the 3rd. This is due to this week's parkrun having pacers.

Wrap up warm and mind how you go now, it's going to be a bit fresh this week.

25th February

The Club Championship season got off to a cracking start at the Village Bakery half Marathon. I reckon the cold weather must have got people moving as there were pbs for Louise Baldwin, Janet Burgess, Simon Huxley, Mimi Owen, Michelle Purcell, Michelle Scrase and Dave Thornton! Medals were also won, with Leah Leonard and Mimi Owen 2nd in their age groups while Jo Grandfield was 3rd in hers. There were also club age records for Jo Grandfield and Mimi Owen. Well done, all!

After one race the Men's championship is headed by Gareth Dodd and the Women's by Mimi Owen. The next Championship qualifying race is the Cheshire 10k at Arley Hall on the 10th March.

There were also reasons to celebrate on Saturday, as Nikki Shingler smashed through the 45 minute mark at the Shrewsbury Park Run. Nikki's reaping the benefit of the longer runs she's been doing. Also in action at Shrewsbury were Katie Prince and Kirsty Fisher. Elsewhere, Rob Moyes and Fi Challinor were at Moors valley, Ali Dolphin at Fountains Abbey and bunch at Erddig: Keith Cotton, Loz Evans, Georgina and Gillian Fowles and Alison Birch. Great to see both Loz Evans and Alison back in the results.

19th February

Mimi Owen was running down in London yesterday, setting a new club age record and placing 1st in her Age Category in the Richmond Half Marathon. Well done, Mimi!

18th February

The latest Social Parkrun saw 10 Whippets travel out to Chester for a run that saw a pb for Jan Eastwood. Pbs were also set by Kirsty Fisher at Telford, Katie Prince at Shrewsbury and Georgina Fowles at Heslington. Well done, all!

14th February

Winter Handicap standings have now been updated Winter Handicap Standings

It's very close at the top with Simon Phillips, Katie Evans and Fi Challinor separated by just 3 points! But with runners doing all 4 races able to drop their worst result, it's still possible for any of the 10 people still competing to win. The last race on the 3rd March should be fun!

12th February

Ali Dolphin was also on good form this weekend, placing 3rd v55 in the Nick Beer 10k. Well done, Ali!

11th February

A baker's dozen of Whippets took part in round 3 of the Winter Handicap at Shrewsbury on Saturday with stunning results - 8 runners were within 13 seconds of their predicted time. The closest three were Fi Challinor (1 second), Simon Phillips (3 Seconds) and James Rainbow (5 Seconds). Full results in due course. Whippets were also in parkrun action at Telford, Penrose, Heslington, Wepre and Erddig.

This morning saw Shaun Burgess set a stunning new 10k PB of 45:34 at the Walton Wobble 10k where he was also 1st M50 - great run, Shaun! Michael Starkey also had a very good run setting a new pb of 57:04.

There was also a good turnout for the 1st Whitchurch 10k training session with 5 runners joining 18 Whippets for a 5k run. It will get harder!

8th February

The club will be hosting a series of training runs aimed at the Whitchurch 10k. These will take place from SJT school on a Sunday morning at 10:00am. The first one is this Sunday 11th Feb and will run for 7 weeks. The aim is 2 weeks 3 miles, 2 weeks 4 miles, 2 weeks 5 miles and on the last week we are looking at running the race route. Everyone is welcome to come along and join in. The more the merrier as we can then cater for different pace groups.

6th February

I returned once again to the Stourbridge Stagger for a nostalgic race that takes in part of my old school XC course. It was my third time out at the 7km distance and I went with an ambitious target in mind, a top 10 finish. It was a cold but dry morning, perfect conditions for the challenging off road race which starts along with the 10 mile option. After a congested start when the courses split I found myself alone but for an old school friend who sailed past me with a cheery wave! I kept her in my sights and tried to keep my own targets in mind. With 2km to go a kindly marshall told me I was in 10th place, I felt I still had more in the tank so pushed on for home. On entering the park at the finish I was battling with lady from Halesowen AC but I managed to find something extra to sprint home and was thrilled to discover I was in 8th position. I think that this winter's xc fixtures have definitely been a good training investment and I would encourage other Whippets to give this race a try.

5th February

After an up and down season, the final fixture at Oswestry on Saturday saw both our teams end up in the same league positions as last year! The men finished in 5th place and the women in 7th - and 8th place in the Masters. This was a great result and reflects good committment over the winter. Simon Phillips was first home for the men on Saturday while Jo Grandfield led the women home. Also running for the men were: Dean Richards, Andy Heath, Shaun Burgess, Peter Holmes, Rob Ingham and James Rainbow. Jo was accompanied by Janet Burgess, Liz Featherstone and Fi Challinor.

Saturday also saw members in parkruns at Sandwell Valley, Cannon Hill, Shrewsbury, Heslington and Erddig. Georgina Fowles setting a new pb at Heslington, well done Georgina!

28th January

Prize for the most adventurous parkrun of the year so far goes to Ali Dolphin for running in Etna, Italy. The rest of you stayed more locally with a good pack running in Shrewsbury while others were at Heslington, Wepre and Erddig. There were pbs for Katie Evans at Shrewsbury and Georgina Fowles at Heslington - well done, both!

If you did race anywhere else this weekend can you let me know.

22nd January

The club sent two good full strength teams to Baschurch on Saturday for the 4th fixture in the North Wales XC League. It was a very traditional XC course over wet and muddy ground. Despite this, both men and women packed well with the result that both men and women finished 5th team on the day. This great result moved the women up to 9th place in their division while the men remained in 6th.  The women are also 7th in the Masters Division. It was good to see Shaun Burgess and Michael Starkey make their XC debut. The finishing positions were:

40 Rob Sharam

44 Paul White

47 Dean Richards

75 Simon Phillips

119 Shaun Burgess

131 Michael Starkey

47 Jo Grandfield

59 Janet Burgess

62 Rachael Foster

65 Liz Rankin

72 Liz Featherstone

It's worth taking a look at the photos in the facebook group to see just how much fun can be had in mud and water!

The final fixture is at the Marches School in Oswestry on the 3rd Feburary.

21st January

Saturday saw race 4 in this year's North Wales Xc League at Baschurch. More on the XC when the results appear, but it looked like everyone enjoyed the water features and cooling weather. It was great to see a few new faces giving it a go!

Friday night also saw XC country action with Simon Phillips, Keith Cotton, Liz Featherstone and Liz Rankin contesting the last race in the Llandegla Dash night race series. Simon was 6th home in the tough race.

Saturday morning saw a smattering of park runs with Mimi in action at Congleton, Martin and Sheridan Lane at Shrewsbury, Fi Challinor, Rob Moyes and Nikki Shingler at Ellesmere Port and Katie Prince and Tom Woodworth at Erddig.

This morning saw Shaun Burgess and Sticks Starkey take part in the Asthma UK charity 10k run at Ellesmere.

16th January

The 2nd round of the Winter Handicap took place within the Shrewsbury Parkrun on Saturday with 10 Whippets contesting the handicap. Dean Richards and John Dillon were best at guessing their run times with both just 6 seconds out. After two races the Handicap is led by Nikki Shingler with Katie Evans, Dean and John Dillon tied in 2nd place! The next race is on the 10th February. Peter Holmes was the only runner to set a Pb at Shrewsbury. I'll get all the tables updated when James Rainbow is well enough to send them.

Katie Prince also ran at Shrewsbury but didn't provide a guesstimate before the race. Elsewhere, Whippets were in Parkruns at Heslington (Georgina Fowles), Ludlow (Ali Dolphin) and Congleton (Katie Webster).

Sunday saw half a dozen Whippets take part in the Run through Tatton Park 10k with Michelle Scrase starting her racing year well with a new PB. Well done, MIchelle. Also enjoying the surroundings were Neil and Jen Spencer, Lynn Norton, Zara Elson and Sally Hales.

12th January

Louise Baldwin has informed me that she also raced the Telford 10k last Sunday knocking 87s off her course best. Nice one, Louise.

9th January

The Club Championship season kicks off next month with the Village Bakery Half Marathon. You can enter here Village Bakery Half Marathon

8th January

Saturday saw teams of Whippets competing in the County XC Championships at Attingham Park. There are photos on Facebook showing that they all had a really good time. There was great packing (or hand holding) from the men with Rob Sharam 29th, Paul White 30th and Dean Richards 31st. Simon Phillips was next in 47th with Rob Ingham in 115th and James Rainbow in 131st. In the muster competition, which takes into account all who ran for each club, the men were 9th team beating Telford Harriers, Wrekin College and Market Drayton - nice one guys! First home for our Women was Mimi Owen in 41st place, Fi Challinor was 53rd and Liz Featherstone 61st. The women were 11th team in their muster competition.

Thanks to Katie Prince for acting as our nominated Marshall! Katie had a busy weekend because she also set a new pb in the rescheduled Telford 10k on Saturday. Nice one, Katie.

There were just a few parkrun results for Congleton (Keith Cotton), Shrewsbury (Katie Webster, Kirsty Fisher and Nikki Shingler) and Ludlow (Ali Dolphin)

2nd January

Back to normal now, folks! So that means no more two parkruns on the same day - this seems to have been a New Year's day challenge some of you couldn't resist! Dean Richards, Simon Phillips, Fiona Challinor and Rob Ingham ran at both Shrewsbury and Telford yesterday morning. They were joined by Rob Moyse at Shrewsbury and Paul Evans and Kirsty Fisher at Telford. If you raced elsewhere please let me know.

Enjoy tonight's normal run with normal people over normal routes.
