9th Birthday Bash - The Rugby Club 18th November 2016

Birthday Awards
Club Champion - Mimi Owen
Birthday Awards
Club Champion - John Dillon

For the second year running the Birthday Bash was held at the Rugby Club and a very fine venue it makes, too! The caterers excelled themselves with the buffet, and there was no danger of anyone going home hungry.

With only one club place in the London Marathon up for grabs there was eager anticipation among the four contenders in the ballot. Adam Richards was the delighted lucky winner.

The Club’s annual awards saw Mimi Owen and John Dillon collecting Championship Shields, with Leah Leonard, Liz Featherstone, Kevin Smith and Jon Morgan picking up second and third place awards.

Dean Richards picked up the Don Wilbraham Trophy for winning the Summer Handicap series by 5 points from Fiona Challinor who in turn just beat James Rainbow. The "Most Improved" awards went to Ken Robbins and a very surprised Michelle Purcell! The award for "Most Improved Beginner" went to Sheridan Lane.

A mind-bendingly evil photographic quiz by Adam Richards tested member's knowledge of local sights.

The raffle was very special this year as it was held in suport of medical treatment for a very poorly young girl called Isla Marshall. Members and local organisations were very generous in providing prizes, and hardly anyone went home without a prize! Alison Birch will now need to get back into serious training as she was winner of the very special first Prize - free entry to a number of races throughout 2017!

Thanks were given to the Rugby Club for hosting the event and the Caterers for providing lovely food. Thanks were also given to Adam Richards and all involved in organising the evening and to members for attending.

7th Birthday Bash - The Archie 21st November 2014

Birthday Awards
Female Club Champion - Christine Henderson
Birthday Awards
Male Club Champion - Gareth Dodd

Thirty-five Whippets celebrated the club's seventh Birthday Bash at the Archibald Worthington Club on Friday, 21st November. Thirty-five members and their partners celebrated the event with a homemade cottage pie supper.

Five members entered the ballot for one of the two Club places in the London Marathon next year with Gareth Dodd and Jon Morgan running out the lucky winners.

One of the highlights of the evening was the presentation of the Club’s annual awards. The men's Club Championship Shield was won by Gareth Dodd with President Jon Morgan runner-up and Richard Stewart in third place. The female Club Championship Shield went to Christine Henderson, with Rachael Foster in second place and Libby Dudleston in third.

Katie Webster marked her impressive season by picking up the Don Wilbraham Trophy for winning the Summer Handicap series by 10 points from Matt Lucas who pipped Mark Gregory by just one point for third. Katie also deservedly picked up the award for the Most Improved Female. The Most Improved male award went to James Marsh. The award for Most Improved beginner was give to Liz Featherstone.

Emily Dove was given a special award in recognition of her outstanding achievement in holding the club records for all distancee from 5k though the Marathon!

Minds were exercised and heads scratched during a short quiz which was followed by a raffle.

The Chairman, Simon Parsons, gave thanks to the Archibald Worthington club for hosting the evening and providing lovely food. Thanks were also given to the Club committee for organising the evening and to the members for attending. Special thanks went to Adam Richards for providing the quiz and baking the birthday cakes.

5th Birthday Bash - The Archie 16th November 2012

Around 70 Whippets attended the club's 5th birthday at the Archibald Worthington Club in Whitchurch. The evening began with a filling dinner of home made Cottage Pie followed by a choice of stunning deserts.

A dozen members had entered the ballot for one of the 3 club places in next year's London Marathon. It would have been cruel to keep them hanging, so dinner was followed by the draw. Against all odds the 3 places all went to men - I have no idea how that happened given that half the entries were female! Any road, the 3 lucky winners were Dean Richards, Richard Stewart and Shane Connolly.

Presentations were then made to our award winners - the new Shields for the Club Champions making their first appearance. Even John Dillon admits he is unlikely to fill all 17 slots! For the record, our awards went to:

All our award winners - except for Christine Henderson who couldn't be there on the night

Sadly, Christine Henderson couldn't be present to receive her award for 3rd place in the Club Championship.

The awards were followed by a 3 round quiz that started with a fiendish picture quiz that tested knowledge of London Underground Stations. This was followed by a less testing round on James Bond. The final challenge was more physical and involved making a weight bearing tower out of marshmallows and cocktail sticks. My team's efforts were thwarted by Stephanie Beeston eating every marshmallow in sight! Dean Richards' team won that particular challenge by cheating in a way that was somehow within the rules. Adam Richards set the quiz - I say no more! Thanks, Adam, the Underground Station picture round was inspired!

The quiz was followed by the cutting of the cake. Once again Rob Sharam had put his master baker's hat on and created a great looking and even better tasting cake!

The evening ended with a raffle - and for once my novel was actually chosen voluntarily by a winner! I hope you enjoy it, Graham, the naughty bits are on pages.....

4th Birthday Bash - The Archie 11th November 2011

The club's 4th birthday was celebrated in fine style at the Archibald Worthington Club in Whitchurch. Some 72 members and partners enjoyed an excellent food, a quiz, the presentation of club awards and a raffle! We were honoured to have Liz Wilbraham present to present our magnificent new "Don Wilbraham Handicap trophy". Liz also commented on how much Don enjoyed his time with the club. Sadly the winner, James Rainbow, was ill in bed and unable to receive the trophy. Apart from James, a great night was had by all!

We were also treated to a birthday cake in club colours in the shape of the Number 4 - and very nice it was too!. All thanks to Rob Sharam. And no, he didn't get a Marathon place just because he baked a cake!

We were also treated to a yummy birthday cake courtesy of Jean Bancroft. Thanks, Jean.

2nd Birthday Bash - Dodington Lodge 13th November 2009

Around forty-five sat down for a hotpot and apple pie supper to celebrate the club's second birthday. The meal was followed by the presentation of our annual awards. The nominees and winners are detailed below. Fortunately there were no embarrassing Hollywood style thank-you speeches so we were all able to get back to the important stuff without too much delay. Even the Chairman kept his welcome speech short.

As well as the award presentations the draw for 2 club places in the London Marathon took place. The lucky(?) winners were Daren Peacock and Andrew Corbett.

Andrew was doubly unlucky because he also won a copy of my novel in the raffle that followed - thanks to all the committee members who contributed prizes. Wisely Andrew had me sign the book to Maureen. I fully expect to see it re-appear in next year's raffle!

The formal proceedings were rounded off by Jon Morgan presenting Alison and Adele with flowers as a thank-you for their work in organising the do.

Sadly, no one disgraced themselves enough to warrant a special mention - unless you count Sean's holiday pictures. Fortunately they were the sanitised ones!

Whippets Birthday Party 14th November 2008

It may look like we're trying to keep our hands warm over a single candle - but we were actually cutting the club's birthday cake.

Good job someone remembered we should photograph the award winners. Apologies to Andy and Jo who had already left.

Whippets Summer Social 5th July 2008

Curshaws, in Jubilee Park, was the venue for the club’s first Summer Social. Despite weddings and holidays, 18 people braved the summer showers to fill the upstairs Conservatory.
social3
We even had our own game of musical chairs as it was only possible to fit in enough chairs for one less than the number present! Still, we are supposed to be a fit bunch.

Justice was done to the buffet but it was with regret that I watched the staff clear away the remnants

Entertainment was provided by Australian singer/guitarist Cameron.

Carrie had to be dragged out to her waiting taxi as he performed an accurate and stirring acoustic midnight rendition of Stairway to Heaven.

I left Simon Phillips and Jonathan Morgan drinking into the morning hours.

A good time was had by all.
